The tenant at Lupine Farm for the 7 years prior to Emily and Bill's tenancy ran a successful organic community supported agriculture program (CSA) using a fraction of the available land. The horses were a new addition with Emily's 2008 arrival and there is an abundance of new life on the property. The horses have not, however, prevented the garden from growing!
In addition to running a riding program, Emily and Bill have teamed up with a local organic gardening class who have been using the gardens for the past three years to provide organic vegetables to the Vassalboro Food Station. Spearheaded by Art and Linda Kingdon, Sou Bouchard, and Louise Alley, this stalwart group has coaxed literally thousands of pounds of produce from the Lupine Farm soil in just a few years. Beyond continuing this partnership, Emily and Bill hope to team up with public schools to provide food-to-table learning experiences for local students sometime in the future.
With the current economy making prices of fresh produce skyrocket and the overzealous use of harmful pesticides and growth agents a widespread practice, it is more important than ever to use the land available to us to grow locally and organically. The gardens at Lupine Farm provide both that local and organic food we need as well as the ideal environment in which to learn about its importance.
